UPDATE: Gunnar is OUT of surgery! Surgery went well. They believe the tumor to be pilocytic astrocytoma which is BENIGN!! 🙌 Praise God! Now we just give him time to recover. The cerebellum deals with balance and motor coordination but neurosurgeon believes with rehab he should recover quickly. In 3 months he will go back for an MRI and pathology results will be back to verify the type of tumor. Give God all the glory! Gunnar had his MRI this morning and unfortunately the lesion has grown—doubled in size actually. He will have brain surgery on March 7th. He will be in the hospital for a few days and then either home or rehab depending on how surgery goes. They will biopsy the lesion to rule out it being a dangerous tumor. 🙏

I know this is “bad news” but let’s talk about how amazing our God is. This lesion is NOT from the accident. We found this lesion BECAUSE of the accident. Had the accident not happened, we would not have known about this rapid growing tumor until it was extremely large. Gunnar is a walking miracle for a reason. Please pray for our sweet boy. ❤️🤍💙

Wednesday he gets another MRI on the lesion that’s on his cerebellum. Then we meet with the neurosurgeon about the next steps. Thursday we meet with the neurologist to discuss taking him off his medicine and playing sports. IF the lesion isn’t growing and they decide not to have surgery and remove it at this time, it’s possible Gunnar could play baseball! Gunnar is still attending Brooks Rehab in Jax Monday-Friday. His outpatient discharge date is set to Aug 16th! We are enjoying being able to come home and spend time with friends and family.

We are waiting results from Neuropsych exam. We met with the neurosurgeon yesterday and we will get another MRI in 6 months to make sure the lesion on the cerebellum isn’t growing. Our goal is for Gunnar to try going back to school part-time on August 29th. 🙏

UPDATE #43: After 41 days in two different hospitals, Gunnar has finally been discharged! 🙌 He was very excited to ring the bell! 🔔 He will still have multiple hours of therapy Monday-Friday in the Pediatric Day Program at Brooks in Jacksonville for the next few weeks. UPDATE #42: Gunnar is getting discharged from inpatient on Friday! 🙌 He will begin the outpatient Pediatric Day Program here on Monday. Brooks is truly an amazing place. The therapists are creative, the nurses and staff are invested —it’s just been an amazing experience so far. Physically Gunnar is just making leaps and bounds! There are some things he needs to work on still in some other areas but they are to be expected with a traumatic brain injury. Thank you everyone for the continued prayers. UPDATE #36: Good news…neuro said MRI looks good. 🙌🙏 The best conclusion as of now to Gunnar’s symptoms is a combination of severe withdrawals from the methadone and Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS). The goal is to get to Brooks Rehab on Tuesday, but we need to continue weaning Gunnar. Please pray for comfort as the doctors and nurses continue to wean Gunnar off his meds.

UPDATE #29: We have been living in darkness for the last 30 hours. Gunnar hasn’t been able to tolerate any light or sounds. Ophthalmologist came and did an exam and Gunnar has papilledema which is swelling on both optic nerves. This can cause extreme headaches so paired with the withdrawals could explain his intense discomfort. New medicine for the papilledema will hopefully give him some relief plus they went back up on the methadone so they could wean slower. Please continue to pray for Gunnar, if we could take his pain away we would. 🥺 This pushes our trip to Brooks rehab back a little bit but in God’s timing he will go. He just needs more rest, more time to heal before beginning rehab.

UPDATE #28: Please pray for Gunnar. He is in complete misery and the high fevers are back. They were weaning methadone (which we discussed in rounds) but also the ativan (unbeknownst to me) today. Please pray for God to give him some comfort through these withdrawals. When he is sleeping he is moaning and writhing in pain during sleep. This is really difficult to watch…thank you for the prayers. 🙏

UPDATE #27: No fever since 9am! 🙌 He slept most of the day but did wake up this evening for awhile. Enough to get a haircut and take his first shower. They plan to try and wean down the methadone tomorrow which is what spiraled the withdrawals from the last two days. Pray for Gunnar’s body to accept the decrease without withdrawals. UPDATE #26: The last 24 hours have been rough for Gunnar. Battling 104/105 fevers on and off and sleeping pretty much the entire time. He does have a partially collapsed lung, but they don’t seem worried as his breathing exercises (or as Emma calls them…his Turkey call 😂)will help him. They believe the extreme fatigue and fevers are withdrawals from all the medicine. Pray for him to get rested so he can begin his road to recovery. UPDATE #25: Gunnar passed his swallow test! 🙌 Unfortunately, he got really sick with a very high fever of 105 for a few hours but it has come down. We believe it may be a serious withdrawal from decreasing his meds. He did get a chest X-ray done due to diminished sounds in one of his lungs. We will get those results in the morning. Gunnar still has a long road ahead of him, but God is great! We ask for special prayers for Jake in the PICU, please pray for healing over his whole body. 🙏

UPDATE #24: I couldn’t wait to share. In 24 hours Gunnar has went from barely being able to stand to walking with assistance! Praise God!!! 🙏😇 We are still waiting on him to do the swallow study to confirm his risk of aspiration. I hope he passes because he is one hungry boy! Thank you for all of the prayers! UPDATE #23: Gunnar made some BIG improvements today! During PT they helped him stand up and take a few steps to me! 🩵 He played catch with daddy. Then we even got to disconnect him and take him for a walk around the unit. He held his head up almost the whole time by himself! 🙌 He is currently at high risk for aspiration, so tomorrow he will get a swallow study done which will give us more information. UPDATE #22: They removed the drain today! 🙌 Now his head is free to roam some more, so physical therapy made him getup, get dressed and sit in a chair for awhile. UPDATE #21: Gunnar still hasn’t officially “woke up” yet. He wakes up for a min or two and if we are lucky we get a response out of him. His pressures were stabilized today, so he will get a MRI after midnight tonight. If all is well, the EBD will come out tomorrow/Sunday. Gunnar has started working with physical/occupational/speech therapy. He has a long road ahead of him, but making progress. Praise Jesus! 🙏

UPDATE #20: Right now Gunnar is still coming out of sedation, so he mainly just lays there for most of the day. A couple times during the day he will wake up for a few minutes. If we are lucky, he doesn’t get angry and will respond to us. Plan is to clamp the EBD tomorrow and watch his pressure throughout the day to make sure his brain is absorbing the brain fluid. If all goes well, he gets that drain out on Sat/Sun. We have a long road ahead of us, but we are blessed that our miracle is here on this road. Thank you for the continued prayers!

UPDATE #17: I walked over to his bed and Matt was on the other side holding his hand. He told him to say hey to mommy. I said, "Hey Gunnar!" He turned his head towards me, opened his eyes trying to find me and then smirked a little smile!!! I instantly started crying. It was so amazing. He is fighting so hard to come back to us. Plan is still to keep him calm and to extubate him tomorrow. He needs his IMT (breathing on his own) test to come back higher than yesterdays. So please pray for Gunnar to be strong during physical therapy today and get that number near the 60s. God is so great! Gunnar's name means warrior and a warrior he is. 💪🙏

UPDATE #16: Last night and this morning Gunnar began thrashing around -quite aggressively at times. Due to him being so responsive to being irritated, they have moved his extubation goal up. The goal is to extubate him in the next 48 hours!! They will perform a CT scan to check for any new bleeds or damage prior to taking the EBD out and getting extubated. So for the next 48 hours, we need to try to keep Gunnar as calm as possible when he gets irritated. UPDATE #12: Gunnar is currently OFF the propofol!! Praise the Lord and thank you for your prayers to help him get off of that medicine. Plan for today is to try to come off another sedative. If his ICPs spike, we will wait for tomorrow. He is also getting a neuro assessment done today. Praying for responses where they ask him to respond. 🤞 There will be another CT scan prior to taking out the drain and the ventilator to check for any more bleeds but that will happen when it’s time to take them out. Also, remember to say a prayer for Emma and Gunnar’s friend too. We thank you for your continued prayers. In Jesus’ name he is healing.

UPDATE #11: Gunnar was unable to come off of the Propofol today due to some spikes, but he was able to come off of his paralytic. Due to that, we got to see a tiny glimpse of hope. 🩵 Hint…watch his left knee. He is still comatose and intubated but progress seems to be happening! It is a waiting game now. Pray for continued decrease in ICPs and for him to be able to get off of the Propofol. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts!

UPDATE #10: Trying to take Gunnar off of the propofol got delayed until this morning. He didn’t tolerate coming off if it well, so he is going to stay on it and they are taking him off of another one instead. They will try to take him off of Propofol again later this afternoon if all is going well. Continued prayers for his body to accept the alternative meds and to keep his ICPs down. Y’all are amazing. Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! 🙏

UPDATE #9: Gunnar had a few bumps today but he is successfully off one of his sedatives. So far so good. 🤞 The next step will be to take him off of the propofol, this is the medicine he MUST come off of to prevent a toxicity called Propofol Infusion Syndrome from occurring. However, this is the medicine that has consistently worked to keep his ICPs down. This is going to be a big night for him, a long night for us. We ask you to pray for low ICPs and for alternative meds to work during any spikes. We appreciate every one of y’all!!!! 🙏

UPDATE #8: Gunnar had a bumpy night, not too bad. Today is a big day for him because they are making lots of changes to his meds. We really, really need him to get off of this propofol (dangerous medicine). It has been the only thing bringing his spikes down, so we need prayers for the other medicines to work. Pray for his body to accept these meds and allow them to help him keep the pressures down. Thank you everyone! 🙏🙏🙏

UPDATE #7: Gunnar had a pretty GOOD day! 🙌 He only had one scary spike in his brain pressure this evening that took a few tries to get down. Neurosurgeon seems optimistic about Gunnar’s ability to heal from this TBI. We won’t know what/if any damages until he is fully awake. We will find that out in the weeks to come. However, we need Gunnar to get off of the “dangerous” meds (propofol for y’all in the medical field). These meds are the only ones bringing his spikes down and we need the alternative meds to work.

Please pray for continued decrease in brain pressure and for Gunnar to respond to the use of alternative meds to decrease the pressure.

UPDATE #6: Gunnar’s pressure in his brain improved over the night. 🙌🏻 However, he is on a very dangerous medicine that helps bring down the pressure so he needs to come off of that medicine. We are on a crucial day, #3. Please continue to pray for decreasing pressure and also pray for other meds to work so he can come off the dangerous medicine. We can’t thank y’all enough for praying for our sweet boy.

UPDATE #5: I’ll start with the good news - MRI shows that he did NOT have a stroke. The damage to the cerebellum was not related to this injury (they think he was born with it).

The bad news - Gunnar had a rough day. He had some scary spikes in pressure today, but luckily these amazing doctors here work diligently to find what works. He had another CT scan because they wanted to see how much the swelling has increased and it showed relatively the same as the MRI from last night.

So the plan is to keep him on a medicine that works for him for another 24 hours. Please pray for the pressure to stay down and when it spikes to guide the doctors to the medicine that will work to bring the pressure down in a quickly manner. We can’t thank everyone enough for everything. We struggle to eat, sleep and conversate - all we want is for our sweet boy to heal. #TLG #toughlikegunnar

UPDATE #4: We are still waiting on final readings of MRI. Unfortunately, Gunnar’s pressures are too high. The doctors are making some adjustments to his meds in hopes to bring the pressure down. Pray for Gunnar to relax and rest to keep those pressures down. That is the main goal for today - get the pressures down. Thank you everyone. 🙏

UPDATE #3: They did not find a single bruise anywhere else on his body! Praise Jesus. 🙌🏻Gunnar is currently waiting to get an MRI to determine the severity of the stroke. Also looking for any other possible brain damage/trauma. We are now at the 24 hour mark, the next two days are crucial, so pray for his pressure to stay low enough to be managed, and a manageable amount of swelling. Thank you for praying! 🙏

UPDATE #2: Gunnar also suffered a stroke that has caused some damage to the lower area of his cerebellum. He was also having multiple seizures, but they have stopped but still monitoring with an EEG. They will now check the rest of his body for any other damage/broken bones. At this time we are waiting…day 3 is predominantly the worst day for brain swelling after a traumatic injury. He begins a feeding tube today. So please continue to pray for keeping the pressure down in his brain and a manageable amount of swelling in his brain. Pray for our viking please!!! 🙏

UPDATE #1: Gunnar was in a four wheeler accident earlier this evening. He was life flighted to Shands. He has a skull fracture and intracranial pressure on his brain, so they put a drain in.
